We’ve All Been There
You’re in the groove, cardiovascular fitness building, confidence rising, when suddenly a niggle shows up. You brush it off, finish the run, and expect it to ease off. But then it’s still there the next day… and the next… and now your whole training plan is in question.
Training for a running event of any length is a significant investment. Physically, financially and emotionally. So, when an injury threatens your participation or the result you’ve been working towards, the discomfort alone isn’t the only pain. There’s also frustration, uncertainty, and sometimes even panic.
Minor Injury or Big Problem
One of the most frustrating things about running injuries is how undramatic they often are. Often there is no major fall, no obvious intensive change in training and it can seem that out the blue your body seems to just stop cooperating.
That’s why it can be hard to know:
How bad is this? Should I push on? Do I rest? Who do I ask?
Or better yet:
Could I have prevented this?
Common Running Injuries
Some of the most common running injuries we see at Atherapy include iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS), tendinopathies affecting the hip, knee, ankle, and foot, bone stress injuries, and lower leg muscle strains.
Each of these injuries involves irritation of a different typeof tissue. From tendons and muscles to connective structures and bone. Because the variation in their structure and function, each injury requires a specific and individualised approach to settle down effectively and support long-term recovery.
Do Injuries Get Better on Their Own?
Our body is pretty good at addressing many different problems that present with pain. However, while time can heal a lot of wounds, how long that takes and how resilient the tissue is afterwards can vary widely.
What to do When You Start Feeling These Niggles
Listen to your body.
Pain is frustrating, but it’s also your body’s most effective way of getting your attention. If we try to ignore it or push through, it tends to get louder. Pausing, getting a proper assessment, and an accurate diagnosis at an early stage can stop a minor irritation from snowballing into something more complex and difficult to recover from.
Where Do We Draw the Line and When Should You Ask for Help?
That depends on you. Your goals, your symptoms, and how much it's affecting your ability to train.
For some, a drop in performance is a significant concern and signal to seek a physiotherapy assessment. For others, it’s when pain starts interfering with training or lingers longer than expected.
Regardless of where you are on that spectrum, the sooner you start the conversation, the better. Most injuries sit on a continuum from mild to more severe and the earlier we can start moving things back toward health, the sooner we can help you return to your best performance with confidence.
